![]() ![]() Finally, we had a Slack thread the day of to discuss what we were doing and encourage collaboration. We also had a short meeting the week of the event to pick through our backlog for 10% day appropriate tasks. We notified our team members of the event a couple days before it happened to make sure they spent some time thinking about what they wanted to work on. This ensured that engineers knew they were supposed to devote that time to work outside the sprint, and automatically declined meetings on that day to give them that time. The first step we took to ensure that 10% day was a success was blocking off the day on our team calendar. Learning about other services or infrastructureįirst off, it is important to note that this kind of event does not succeed without a great deal of care and attention.Improving the performance of our platform. ![]() The plan for 10% day was to have one day every two weeks that engineers could use for those things that have trouble making it into our quarterly plan, including but not limited to: So, with my manager’s help, I organized a series of process experiments in an attempt to test that theory. I’ve always thought that a bottom-up engineering-led process, that complements the top-down one, would be an effective way to deal with this problem. Whether it be tech debt, old bugs, or developer wellness improvements, some things just have a hard time getting prioritized and making it into the plan. This process works fine, but it seems that some things often fall by the wayside. Our software development process is fairly standard: product managers identify new features or improvements, then product works with design and engineering to determine requirements, and finally we use agile development to bring the project to life. CalTech has a certificate program that I recommend where they introduce you to CAMEO.On the Safety Tools team we build software to improve ops efficiency, allowing our agents to more quickly and effectively remove policy violating content from Reddit. Many universities offer MBSE Intro courses, and your company should reimburse you. NoMagic has a page of quick reference guides. SysML Distilled is another good resource to accompany Practical Guide to SysML, but I have recommended Friedenthal to everyone who needs MBSE experience. u/dusty545/ links some excellent resources in this thread. At the CSCI, we transitioned to modeling-language best suited for the engineering teams working in those domains (e.g., SysML for HW and UML for SW). On a recent program, I implemented UAF in the Operational Domain and continued forth to the System level. Likewise, DoD is requiring MBSE be included, to varying degree, for defense contractors competing on bids for multiple programs. Recently, MBSE has gained more traction with the dawn of digital transformation and Model-Based Everything (MBx). Many years ago, there was a big push from program management to start using MBSE but nobody wanted to spend money on it. Limit the use of engineering jokes.Ĭall for Engineers: Tell us about your job!
